Three blizzards in three weeks find Marmaduke Wales in a comtemplative mood. "People
natter
on about snowplows and shovels and antifreeze and road salt," he recently reflected,
"when the
essential question, of course, is: what does the well-dressed gentlemen wear
for a winter storm? Far too many people
see even the lightest dusting of snow as a chance
to wear the dumpiest down-filled duster in their armoire,
when it should instead be seen as
a chance to show off a particularly enticing ensemble against a
flattering snowy white
backdrop. For day wear in winter, I recommend a dark jacket and tie, offset by
the sort
of pants that a havering hooligan might have chosen for a particularly bumptious dust-up
outside
the Millwall Den in '70's, while an orange cloth bag at night not only lends a festive touch
of color
to drab winter wear, but also serves as a useful spotting aid when your chauffeur is
avidly searching
the streets for you through the frost-embossed windows of your waiting Bentley."
