Families in the Maritimes in Canada have been celebrating
Walrus
Day for generations. Children traditionally celebrate
Walrus Day by dressing as Walrus
seafarers – Walrus pirates,
Walrus fishermen, Walrus stevedores, Walrus
cruise ship
captains – and telling nautical jokes and stories. The Walrus
costumes
are often sewn by hand, and the comic routines are
often rehearsed with all the dedication of a
Broadway trouper.
Custom dictates that a solid gold fish (actually a solid chocolate
pike
wrapped in golden foil known as the 'glittering jackfish') be
awarded for best costume, best joke
and best story – and no sooner
have the tusks and whiskers been tucked away and
whisked
into closets than the costumes and routines for the next
Walrus
Day are already being planned!
